About TAGG of BC

Ginseng gardens in the Thompson River valley east of Kamloops
Commercial ginseng production in B.C. began in 1982 in the Bontanie Valley near Lytton when Chai-Na-Ta Ginseng Products Ltd. planted their first 5 acres.  Two other growers established ginseng gardens in 1985 and by 1987 there were 12 growers cultivating ginseng.  On February 5, 1987 The Associated Ginseng Growers of British Columbia  was officially incorporated under the Societies Act.  The intent of the organization was to serve as a "umbrella group" for all growers within the province.

This "gold rush" industry expanded very rapidly with over 130 growers by 1994 with a yearly production over 2 million pounds.  With the increased production not only in British Columbia, but in the other production areas of North America, prices began to fall until by 1999 prices were close to, or below the cost of production.  Many growers were forced to leave the industry and now, in 2003, we are looking at approximately 30 growers.  These growers have been successful in reducing costs, and increasing production of quality root and appear to be in a position to benefit from recovering root prices.

The Associated Ginseng Growers of B.C. (T.A.G.G.) continues to function with a annual general meeting and a 1 day conference held in late February each year.
